Afro-Uruguayan
Afro-Uruguayan are Uruguayans of African descent. The first Africans were brought in 1587 and slavery was abolished in 1842. They are estimated to be about 9% of the population with 270,000 Afro-Uruguayans. They are mainly in Montevideo, the capital city. The African influences are: MUSIC AND DANCE- candombe and malambo-Uruguayan; RELIGION- umbanda
